Travelling offers me the opportunity to relax and discover things on my own.
Here are 5 main things I found out during my visit to Zanzibar, Tanzania.
1. PREDOMINANTLY ISLAM
I had no idea Zanzibar was predominantly Islam until we started preparing for our visit. One needs to be very modest in their way of dressing in public areas. No one will ‘attack’ you for ‘indecent exposure’ but the stares may make you uncomfortable. It is OK to wear bikinis and hot pants at the sea-side.
2. AFFORDABLE
Food and drinks were relatively affordable. A decent meal with soda/beer in a nice restaurant for about 2,500 TZ Shillings (~6,00GHC or 1,09USD).
Accommodation and transportation very affordable too.
The value of their currency reminded me of the old Ghanaian Cedi. 🙂
3. GENTLE OCEAN WAVES
White sand and clear blue water! Very beautiful view. The sea was not as “violent” as what I know in Ghana. The waves here rippled gently. 🙂

There are two non swimmers here floating 🙂
Tides were very low during the day. This made me see many sandbanks in the ocean. One of the most beautiful ones I saw was the Nakupenda Beach.
Beauty in smaller towns
Forget the capital city and stay in the villages or little towns. The beauty of the ocean can be seen in the smaller towns. I stayed in Nungwi, about 2 hours away from Stone Town.
4. HISTORY OF SLAVERY
I suck at history. About the history of slavery, most of what I remember is the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. I suppose that is because, a major part of it happened in Ghana (then, Gold Coast).
Whilst in Zanzibar, I learnt more about the slave trade presided over by Arab traders.

5. THE ZANZIBAR THEY DON’T SHOW YOU
The goats and cows at the beach. Hahaha..Yes! Many of them were having a good time like everyone else.
